Gramicci: How a Climber's Garage Project Became a Global Icon

If a pair of trousers ever changed an industry, it's this one – a humble experiment that first took shape in a garage in Ventura, California. Ever since, Gramicci gear has climbed every granite cliff, rolled along every surf break, been ground by every skateboard and worn by every city dweller imaginable… without forgetting the gritty origins that set it all in motion. Look beneath that distinctive little red running man, and you’ll find a story of rebellion, ingenuity, and a complete disrespect for uncomfortable pants.

YOSEMITE BEGINNINGS

In the early ’70s, California was a hub for loose bands of climbing nuts who called themselves the Stonemasters. Based primarily around Yosemite National Park, their mission was to push climbing further, faster and more radically than anyone had before, knocking off records for big wall climbs and ascents like a single-day first of El Cap and the initial free ascent of Astroman.

In spirit, they were a blend of Jimi Hendrix-listening, flower-power bandana- and paisley-wearing provocateurs embodying the philosophies of Bruce Lee; their dress code was a reflection of that – a potent mix of tough-guy white painter's trousers and standard-issue military fatigues, as yet unprepared for the nuances of hard climbing.

Yosemite Stonemaster Mike Graham was not someone to simply suffer inconvenience: as the group’s solution provider - having already crafted lightweight portable bivouac systems and imported cutting-edge sticky-rubber climbing shoes from Spain - he focused his attention on the most immediate source of clothing-related limitations – pants.

THE FIRST CLIMBING SHORTS

From his years on big rock faces, Graham knew what was needed: a diamond-shaped gusset, borrowed from martial arts trousers, that offered 180-degree articulation at the hip. It needed to be made from durable, snag-proof canvas tough enough to withstand constant abrasions as they navigated up granite and a single, easily cinched nylon web belt, repurposed from backpack straps, capable of being adjusted one-handed for speed between ascents.

He pulled concepts from across cultures, from climbing to fight sports; all it needed was his vision to create shorts designed not for form, but for function that moved as you moved up the wall.

FROM SHORTS TO G-PANTS

Fast-forward to 1982: the brand “Gramicci” was born, originally an Italian-sounding moniker Mike Graham started referring to himself as during an all-Italian (yet totally non-Italian) ascent of Yosemite's Half-Dome; the brand, like the name, stuck. It started with the shorts and shortly after, trousers, which became an ubiquitous symbol amongst the climbing community: seemingly bomb-proof pant, which gave them the nickname, “the G-Pants.”

Demand rippled through the circles of the climbing fraternity before moving on to surf-shredders, skaters and pavement pounders too; by the mid-80s, the now instantly recognisable red Running Man was synonymous with reliable, robust gear that simply wasn't going to quit when you needed it most.

ACROSS THE OCEAN

From those rugged walls of Yosemite to breaks, boards, and streets worldwide, the quiet story of good design unfolded. Gramicci morphed from niche cult item into a bona fide cultural signifier; despite ownership shifts over subsequent years that sent the brand off its established trajectory, the ethos of putting the body first and a love of simple utility remained in its DNA.

Japan was one of those places that understood and embraced Gramicci’s functional aesthetic profoundly; in Tokyo’s bustling streetwear scene, where form and functionality were equally important, the brand not only found its footing again, but thrives to this day.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD PAIR?

Gramicci are meticulous when it comes to detail; here’s a quick guide to what to look for:

THE GUSSET: The diamond shape under the groin isn’t just design flair; it offers incredible hip-joint mobility.

FABRIC: Expect tough, textured canvas that should feel robust and designed to age beautifully.

THE BELT: The web belt with a side release buckle is both aesthetic and incredibly functional.

LOGO: The little red running man is instantly recognisable; on genuine items it is printed with a clean, distinct stroke.

BUILT TO KEEP MOVING

Gramicci was never about trying to force an evolution onto fashion – fashion, eventually, just happened to them. They were simply out to fix a real-world clothing issue for active people. 40-odd years later, that principle hasn’t changed, resulting in durable, highly functional clothing that's made with movement as its first and guiding principle. At Merchant Menswear, we're dedicated to stocking brands with exceptional history and clear purpose.
